7 essential spots + perfect timing in the Eternal City

1. Colosseum

⏰ Best time: 8:30am opening (golden morning light)

💡 Tip: Book ONLINE in advance (€18, includes Roman Forum). Physical ticket line = 2h+ wait. Interior photographable but crowded.

Metro: Colosseo (Line B) | Avoid: 11am-3pm (crowded + harsh sun)

2. Trevi Fountain

⏰ Best time: 6am-7am (ONLY time without crowds)

Trevi Fountain

World's most famous fountain. After 9am = impossible to photograph without 500 people. Dawn or sunrise MANDATORY for good photos.

💡 Tradition: Toss coin (right shoulder, back turned) = guaranteed return to Rome.

Metro: Barberini (Line A) + 5min walk | FREE

3. Vatican City

⏰ Best time: 9am Vatican Museums opening

Museums + Sistine Chapel: €20 online (book 1 month ahead). Chapel = NO PHOTOS allowed (strict guards).

St. Peter's Basilica: FREE but long line. Dome €10 (tiring climb but 360° view).

💡 Dress code: Shoulders and knees covered. Shorts/tank tops = entry denied.

4. Pantheon

⏰ Best time: Noon (unique zenithal light)

Pantheon interior

Roman temple with oculus (roof opening). Sun ray enters exactly at noon = unique photo moment. Entrance €5 (was free until 2023).

💡 Curiosity: When it rains, water enters through oculus. There's drainage in the floor.

Access: Historic center, walkable from many attractions

5. Piazza Navona

⏰ Best time: Early morning (8am) or late afternoon (6pm)

Piazza Navona

Baroque square with 3 fountains. Free, always accessible. Surrounding restaurants expensive (touristy) but beautiful setting.

💡 Avoid: Eating at square restaurants (overpriced). Walk 2 blocks = normal prices.

6. Villa Borghese

⏰ Best time: Golden hour (5pm-7pm)

Villa Borghese gardens

Huge park with gardens, lakes, viewpoints. Piazza del Popolo view from above. Park entrance FREE. Borghese Gallery (inside) €20 - book ahead.

Metro: Flaminio or Spagna

7. Trastevere

⏰ Best time: Sunset (6pm-7:30pm)

Trastevere streets

Authentic neighborhood with cobblestone streets, local trattorias, nightlife. Photograph narrow streets, colorful facades, laundry lines.

💡 Dinner: Best Roman restaurants here. Less touristy than center.

Tram: 8 to Trastevere
